The PHAOU at the Biomedical and Clinical Research Centre (BCRC) is dedicated to advancing health equity, community empowerment, and systems transformation through collaborative research, advocacy, and outreach. Rooted in the principles of co-design and participatory action, the Unit champions inclusive, locally driven solutions that address the pressing public health challenges of our time.
Our mission is to co-design, implement, and evaluate evidence-based, culturally responsive interventions that strengthen health systems, uphold patient rights, and address the social and environmental determinants of health. We employ transdisciplinary and participatory approaches, integrating knowledge from epidemiology, behavioural science, health communication, nutrition, health policy, and indigenous practices to generate practical, community-centred solutions.
We specialise in:
- Infection prevention and control, including hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial stewardship
- Health promotion and disease prevention across the life course
- Advocacy for patient rights, health equity, and people-centred care
- Design and evaluation of clinical trials for public health innovations
- Research on therapeutic foods and nutrition-based interventions
- Evidence synthesis (all types of reviews) to inform public health policy and practice
- Global health and health systems research focused on resilience and inclusivity
- Community engagement, health literacy, and capacity building for behavioural and structural change
Our work is grounded in trust-based partnerships with communities, civil society, academic institutions, and health systems stakeholders, ensuring that research and interventions are both scientifically rigorous and socially relevant. By prioritising the voices of underserved populations and local knowledge systems, the Unit facilitates translating public health research into real-world impact.
Through this approach, the PHAOU seeks to:
- Empower individuals and communities to be co-creators of their health and well-being
- Reduce health disparities and strengthen community resilience
- Influence public health policy and practice through robust evidence and advocacy
- Position Ghana as a hub for transformative, inclusive, and globally relevant public health research
The PHAOU is a platform for collaboration, innovation, and action-driving equitable health outcomes that honour lived experiences while embracing scientific excellence.
